CRYSTAL PALACE HOOLIGANS JAILED

THE last of the 16 football hooligans involved in mass derby day violence on a train have been jailed.

A gang of Crystal Palace supporters boarded a train at Sydenham station at 2.20pm on September 1 last year and began to randomly attack passengers in two carriages.

They were travelling to their side’s match at home to Charlton Athletic.

A 24-year-old suffered a broken nose while other passengers were head-butted, punched and verbally abused.

CCTV footage showed parents shielding their children and alcoholic drinks being thrown at women.

"The group was going mad waiting for the doors to open. As they did a roar went up and they boarded the train in a pincer movement. They immediately began to attack people. The violence took place in a confined place. It involved a lot of people. Passengers were afraid for their own safety and of the safety of others."

Five of the 16 men involved were caged for up to four years at Southwark Crown Court.

Andrew Spicer, aged 38, from Ashford, had pleaded guilty and was given a 30 month jail sentence.

Ashley White, aged 21, from Purley, was convicted by a jury and given a 48 month jail sentence.

Carl Thomas, aged 40, from Thornton Heath, was convicted by a jury and given a 38 month jail sentence.

Clive Taylor, aged 35, from Thornton Heath, was convicted by a jury and given a 48 month jail sentence.

Darren Bush, aged 39, from South Norwood, was convicted by a jury and given a 36 month jail sentence.

All 16 men, with the exception of a 16-year-old who was given a community service order, have now been handed prison terms of between 24 and 48 months for violent disorder.

Judge Stephen Robbins described the violence as “mob conduct at its worst”.

They have all been banned from attending matches or travelling on the railways for up to 10 years on match days.
